Stan Cho on the set of “Law & Order.” He is one of several GTA PC MPPs who used a “special circumstances” allowance to claim short-term accommodations in Toronto — something Stiles has described as “outrageous.”
When they were first elected in 2018, Premier Doug Ford and his Conservative government told the people of Ontario that “the party with the taxpayers' money is over.”
This past week, we learned that the party never ended. It just moved to luxury suites in downtown Toronto hotels.
Doug Ford's MPPs have spent the last few years racking up over $120,000 in expenses for luxury hotel stays, billed straight to the Ontario taxpayer.
The worst part? We're talking about MPPs who are based in the GTA; abusing a system that's meant to be accessed only under exceptional circumstances, like in the event of a snowstorm that makes it impossible to commute home from Queen's Park.
The list of top spenders is staggering. Hardeep Grewal, who has only been the MPP for Brampton East since 2022, has somehow managed to run up a bill of nearly $30,000.
Nina Tangri, the MPP for Mississauga—Streetsville, tallied just shy of $19,000.
Tangri narrowly beat out the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Gaming, Stan Cho. Despite representing the riding of Willowdale and being able to get to Queen's Park without even changing subway lines, the Minister billed you for over $16,000 in luxury hotel stays, including $6,000 in just one month.
The Minister's actual home is less than six kilometers from the Ontario Legislature.
It speaks to a culture of entitlement that has bloomed throughout the Ford government like algae. The people of Brampton, Mississauga, and even Willowdale don't get taxpayer-funded luxury hotel rooms to go to and from work. They commute. They walk, bike, drive, or take public transit. So why do these MPPs think they're above the hard-working people of Ontario? Why do they feel like they get to play by a different set of rules?
Like any organization, culture starts at the top. Minister Cho, and the 19 other MPPs who got caught with their hands in the cookie jar are just following the example set by the Premier.
We're only a few months removed from Doug Ford using taxpayer dollars to buy himself a luxury private jet, at a $30-million price tag. When he had to sell it back after the people of Ontario rightly wondered why their Premier was living high on the hog while they were struggling to put food on the table, he didn't apologize. He whined and complained about how much he deserved it.
Doug Ford and his Conservative government think they're rockstars; living the 'suite life' in five-star hotels, and cruising on private jets to avoid flying with the people they're supposed to serve, while sticking those same hard-working taxpayers with the bill.
This is a government more concerned with room service than public service. To them, the people of Ontario are just cash cows for their lavish lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Ontarians are hurting. People are putting groceries back on the shelves. They're one missed paycheck away from not being able to pay their rent. They're waiting nearly 20 hours in emergency rooms.
Doug Ford doesn't think he owes the people of our province anything. He's wrong. He owes them their money back; he owes them answers, and he owes them a commitment to stop wasting their hard-earned money.
The people of Ontario work hard, and they play by the rules. They expect their Premier, and their government to do the same. The Ontario NDP is ready to do that and deliver for them.
We look forward to earning your trust.
